Hugues studied flute at the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music. During this time, he learned with some of Britain’s most eminent teachers and players, including Michael Cox, Paul Edmund-Davies, Katherine Baker, and Laura Jellicoe.
Since finishing his studies, Hugues has developed a varied career with a blend of teaching and playing. In 2019, he was a member of Southbank Sinfonia, during which time he worked on many experimental projects looking at new ways of bringing music to new audiences. In 2020, he took up teaching at the Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School, where he really thrived helping students with their first steps on the flute as well as seeing more advanced students through their exams. During these years he also worked in a specialist flute shop, helping every kind of player imaginable choose the right flute for them. On returning to Manchester in 2022, Hugues continued to develop his teaching with more focus on adult players, while his playing work also expanded to include performances with the likes of the Halle, Opera North, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Royal Opera House, Scottish Opera, RTE Concert Orchestra and Ulster Orchestra.
Working with flute players of every kind as a teacher, colleague and consultant has given Hugues a unique flexibility of approach that enables him to tailor his approach to teaching to each individual student.
